Why bother with a Gmail signature?
Gmail's built-in signature editor is basic: plain text, fiddly formatting, and no easy way to build something that looks designed. How to add your signature to Gmail (desktop)
- Build your signature in Sigline and click Copy signature (this copies the formatted version, not raw code).
- In Gmail, click the gear icon → See all settings.
- Scroll to the Signature section and click Create new. Give it a name.
- Click inside the signature box and paste (Ctrl/Cmd + V). Your formatted signature appears.
- Under "Signature defaults," choose your new signature for new emails and replies/forwards.
- Scroll down and click Save Changes. Done.
What about the Gmail mobile app?
The Gmail app on iPhone and Android uses a separate mobile signature setting (plain text only), which overrides nothing on desktop — your desktop HTML signature still sends from the web. If you want your full signature on mobile too, compose in the mobile browser at mail.google.com, or accept the simpler mobile text signature for on-the-go replies. Most people keep a short text version on mobile and the full designed signature on desktop.
Tips for a Gmail signature that renders perfectly
- Keep images small and hosted. Upload your photo through Sigline so it's embedded properly — Gmail blocks oversized attachments.
- Test it first. Send yourself an email and open it on your phone. If anything looks off, simplify.
- Don't go overboard. Gmail clips nothing, but readers skim — name, title, photo, phone, one link, one button is plenty.
- Use the defaults wisely. Many people want the full signature on new emails but a shorter version on replies — Gmail lets you set them independently.
